Linen offers unlimited creative potential and lasting enjoyment.
We never tire of linen at the dining table and of bedding made of pure or blended linen. Linen is unique and the quality and utility of linen is unrivaled. The natural comfort and durability of pure linen make it the ideal material for exclusive home linens. No other fiber can offer linen's unique blend of luxury and comfort, supreme elegance and down-to-earth practicality. Flax is also an exceptionally ecologically-friendly product. Every part of the plant is used and can be recycled as well as being biologically biodegradable. Linen remains the fibre of the future.
As climatic conditions in Western Europe are perfect for growing flax, it is one of the few crops still produced in this region, with nearly 130,000 acres under cultivation annually. Flax has been farmed and linen fabrics have been woven in Flanders for centuries. By the 18th century there were dozens of weaving firms operating in and around Meulebeke, situated near Kortrijk, emerging as one of the villages with the largest linen production.
Of these firms only two remain: Libeco founded in 1864 and Lagae Linens founded in 1858. The two companies merged in 1997 and since then LibecoLagae NV has grown steadily and today accounts for more than 60% of the total Belgian linen production. Libeco Home is a division of LibecoLagae and specialises in manufacturing and distributing superior quality household linen and exclusive fabrics. It has its own stitching operation in Meulebeke. Produced by true Masters of Linen, the undisputed luxury and quality of Libeco weaves make for first class products which will only increase in appearance and appeal as they age.
