THINCUT Porcelain Pendant Light by CORDULA KAFKA

We first spotted Thincut back in 2001/2002, when Cordula tentatively exhibited her first product designs at the Salone Satelite in Milan. Since then we have waited patiently for her collection to develop and mature. And now, finally, Cordula`s Thincut pendant light is here!
Thincut`s light sculpture consists of 40 lined-up sheets hand-moulded from biscuit porcelain, a soft, lively material whose natural liquid state can still be defined even after firing. Fine moulding waves and traces originating from the manual working process are esthetically integrated and give each model its very own unique character.
The row of porcelain sheets is loosely suspended. Unlit, each panel has the same snow-white colour but, when lit, light from 5 bulbs inside the panels breaks through the gaps in a rhythmic interchange of light and shadow. A draft or breeze sets the panels in gentle motion.
Thincut`s constructive elements - from the support frame to the ceiling fixture - show subtle modesty. Reduced to a purely functional shape, the design offers the porcelain the space needed to achieve its full glorious effect.
