SUNMOON Porcelain Wall Light by CORDULA KAFKA
Part of the Within4Walls Collection since 2008
The technique of lithophany - originating from the Greek words for `stone` (lithos) and `lantern` (phanos) - was developed in Berlin in the early 19th Century. It produced translucent porcelain pictures by using a substance from which a particularly transparent porcelain could be fired. The varying degrees of transparency of the relief panels resulted in unusual shadow effects and the technique was used to create porcelain genre and landscape paintings as well as a wealth of other pictorial motifs. However, with the invention of photography, lithophany lost its importance and fell into neglect.
Cordula rediscovered this old and complex technique and has given it a contemporary flavour in her beautiful design for the SunMoon wall light.
SunMoon`s orbital imagery is worked as a relief into 3mm thick porcelain sheets. According to the relief`s varying material thickness, the light shines through the picture in varying intensity. In its meticulous design, SunMoon`s minimally constructed elements underline the soft charater of the light plates, resulting in a highly atmospheric wall light of exquisite design and infinite delicate character. Absolutely divine!
SunMoon is available in 5 different designs.
