MACCHINA MINIMA Steel and Brass Light by MICHELE DE LUCCHI for Produzione Privata
Part of the Within4Walls Collection since 2006
"Today we are confused by a machine civilisation where everything seems to work only by complicated systems. There is a tendency to forget the fascination of simple machines - the play of counterweights and levers - that still express the sense of their functions. The idea of the minimal machines does not come from a specific technique, but from a system of dealing with design in the light of possible mechanical solutions.
This concept has guided many of my designs, among which the best-known is the Tolomeo light for Artemide.”
- De Lucchi
As part of his studio work De Lucchi re-worked his classic, multi-award winning Tolomeo design and came up with the Macchina Minima.
This incredibly classy and handsome light resembles the Artemide product, but a greater complexity prevents the design from ever being mass-produced. Macchina Minima no.8 is an updated version of no.7 and is like its predecessor a light with two movements: vertical and circular (359°). The combination of these two movements made by the arm makes for an extremely flexible light. The rod and rosette are in varnished metal, the lampshade is in parchment paper and the counterweight is in turned brass.
Beautiful Macchina is in production since 2000.
